Unfettered and Unhurt
Hearing them sing, and astonished at seeing Hananaiah, Azariah and Mishael alive in the furnace, King Nebuchadnezzar arose and asked his nobles, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” “Assuredly, O King,” they answered. “But,” he replied, “I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God”.
Despite his power and influence, Nebuchadnezzar is not able to destroy three young men who refuse to reject the Living God and bow in worship to him, the King. Not only are these faithful tossed into a fiery furnace, they are bound and yet . . . they sing praise to God . . . and they walk freely with a companion amidst the flames that were meant to devour them.
God says: I am eager to rescue you each day just as I rescued my faithful in the stories the scripture tells. The little bonds that earthy powers believe to be inviolate are nothing to me. I am beyond and within all power. I am more powerful than all powers on the earth combined. I am more gentle than the gentlest of my creatures and so no matter the fire, you will withstand it. For I am in you and with you always so that you remain unfettered and unhurt.
Let us remember to allow our hands to be God’s hands so that we might help to complete God’s work.
