James 3:1-6: Words and Actions
Thursday, October 13, 2022
Our words carry weight far greater than the power we might imagine, and when we learn to control our speech we learn to listen than more we speak. We learn to allow God to speak through our actions.
James uses a series of metaphors to convey three simple messages: we can begin a huge conflagration with a simple sentence, we teach others far more through our actions than through our words, and we can move heavy cargo when we spread wide sails to the gentlest of breezes.
If we hope to accept our shortfalls, we must first listen, and then we must act in God. If we hope to find God’s wisdom, we must speak more with our gestures than with our tongues.
As we spend time with these images, let us consider the value and worth of James’ words. When we compare the verses from different Bible versions, we allow God’s voice to speak to us clearly.
