Micah 6:1-10: Requirements
Thursday, June 2, 2022
What is it that God requires of us if we wish to enter the kingdom as children of God?
This is what your God requires of you . . .
And when we ask, can we say that we can put aside our willfulness to listen for God’s voice?
Do justice . . .
When we hear these words, are we willing to enact God’s justice?
Love kindness . . .
When we love our friends, can we also love our enemies?
Walk humbly with your God . . .
When we blame others for our failures, can we accept our faults and ask forgiveness?
God asks: My people, what have I done to you, and how have I wearied you? Answer Me.
When we hear these words, what do we reply?

Being a Christian is hard work.
In verses 3-5, God is admonishing Israel for sin. Verse six has the people asking what kind of sacrifice is necessary.
God wants a “contrite heart and a broken spirit” (cf. Ps 51:17). He wants us to be in a state of grace. As Christians, the central focus of our lives is the Resurrection and the defeat over sin.
A ram, or a goat, or a bull cannot take away sin. Only God can do that, choosing to be incarnated as Jesus Christ, fully human and fully divine.
As Christians, the standards are higher for us. In addition to the Ten Commandments, we have Jesus’ New Testament commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself” (cf. Mt 22:39, Mk 12:31). That one can be very difficult!
Jesus also left us the Beatitudes (cf. Mt 5:1-10, Lk 6:20-26. They are a model of living for every Christian. Again, not easy stuff here!
We also have the four cardinal (or “hinge”) virtues (prudence, temperance, justice, and courage), and the three theological virtues infused at Baptism and strengthened in Confirmation (faith, hope, and charity or love) to help guide us on our separate paths.
Whoever thinks it’s easy hasn’t really tried.
