James 1:26-27: Reaching Out
We benefit from James’ clarity at the end of this first chapter. How do we become doers of the Word and not sayers only. What does it take to enter into solid and holy relationships with others? Humility, honesty, and care for the marginalized.
Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.
In these opening verses James gives us a view of the whole person who enters into the work of the kingdom with a full heart and willing hands. We do more than we say. We give more than we receive. We look to God for all things rather than looking to the world.
